New Orleans may be known as an international party destination, but it's really much more than that. It's a city full of culture, history and is also the home to a number of serious higher learning intuitions including Tulane University, Loyola University and Xavier University.
Tulane is the largest of them all, with more than 12,000 undergrad and graduate students. It dates back to 1834 when it started as a public medical college. Today popular majors include architecture, business and the university is known for their law school.
Loyola is the second largest with more than 5,000 students including undergrads, graduates and law students. It was founded in 1904. Today it's a private, co-ed Jesuit University and is one of the larger Jesuit universities in the south. In 2012, U.S. News & World Report Best College ranked Loyola eighth in the south.
Xavier is historically a black Roman Catholic university, the only higher education intuition with that unique distinction. It was established in 1925 and current has more than 3,200 students. The school is known for their strengths in sciences, including biology and chemistry.
Both Tulane and Loyola are located Uptown, along St. Charles Avenue. Xavier is located in Gert Town, a section of Mid City.
There are no hotels within walking distance of any of the universities, but there are a number that are just a short drive or streetcar ride away.
